Why Does Home Decor Shopping Fix Everything?

HomeSense Is Our Super Bowl

We took the podcast out of the studio this week and into the only place either of us goes to feel better about our lives: the aisles of HomeSense, on a weekday, with no list and no plan.

This is not a shopping trip. This is a sport. And we are, respectfully, very good at it.

Why Does One Candle Feel Like Getting Your Life Together?

Here is the question we actually came to answer. Your inbox is a crime scene, you have not replied to your mother in four days, and somehow buying one candle makes you feel like a person who has it handled.

It is not the candle. It is that picking something for your space is one of the only decisions in a week that is entirely yours, costs fourteen dollars, and produces a visible result within the hour. Most of what we do at work takes six weeks and a meeting to show anything at all.

The Scents Are Not All Winners

A respectful amount of the episode is us holding candles up to each other’s faces and asking who signed off on this. Some of them are genuinely beautiful. Some of them smell like a hotel lobby having a breakdown.

No notes on the good ones. Many notes on the rest.

The Raccoon Art Was Not Negotiable

At some point you turn a corner and find a piece of art you did not know you needed, and then you simply cannot leave without it.

This time it was a raccoon. We are not going to explain it and we are not taking questions.

It Is a Safe Space, and That Is Not a Joke

There is something specific about wandering a shop alone where nobody needs anything from you. No one is asking you a question. No one needs a decision. Your brain gets to switch off in a way it does not at home and definitely does not at work.

That is most of what the retail therapy is. Not the buying — the hour of nobody wanting anything.

Changing Your Space Is Changing Your Life

We talk about redecorating after a breakup, because almost everyone does it and almost nobody admits why.

You cannot make him different, you cannot make the job different, and you cannot speed up the part where it stops hurting. You can move the sofa. You can change what you look at when you open your eyes. It sounds small and it is not, because the room is the one thing in the whole situation that will actually do what you tell it.

Making your space feel like yours — not a flatmate’s, not his, not whatever was already there when you moved in — does something disproportionate to how much it costs.

Career Planning for Our Cats

The pet section was a mistake and we would make it again. Our cats are unemployed, deeply unqualified, and now have several new possessions.

We discussed their future. The outlook is poor.

Girl Math, and Knowing When to Stop

Girl math gets a bad reputation from people who have never used it properly. It was on sale, so it is free. You came for one thing, so the second thing does not count. You returned something last week, so technically the shop owes you.

But the actual skill is knowing where the line is. There is a version of this that is a nice hour and a candle, and a version that is you buying a throw blanket because you do not want to go home and think about something. We know the difference. We do not always act on it. We know it.

Shopping for Your Future Self

The best thing you buy is never for the person you are in the shop. It is for the version of you who comes home on Thursday after a bad day, puts the light on, and finds the place already feels good.

She did not do anything to deserve it. Buy it for her anyway.

So tell us: what is your favourite section, and what is the single most unnecessary thing you have ever carried to the till? We will not judge you. We bought the raccoon.
